Let’s face it, one-to-one ABA is awesome but it’s not realistic forever and ever. We really want our learners to start paying attention and responding and learning in group situations. Therefore, at some point we need to practice some whole group instruction.
We typically use direct instruction programs with some of our advanced learners, especially when working towards academic goals. Direct instruction is an evidence-based, somewhat scripted set of curriculum based on ABA principles.
Michael Maloney is an expert in direct instruction and precision teaching. His work addresses the growing literacy problem, which he refers to as a global pandemic. We talk with Michael about the Follow Through Project, why the system won’t address the literacy problem, and what we can do as practitioners to make a difference.
