Play is a skill that a lot of our learners need to be taught. Some children enjoy unstructured or open-ended play because they don’t know what to do with different toys. In this podcast, we discuss how to teach play and the best ways to help learners develop the critical skills found within play.
Many skills taught through play, like imitation and interaction with adults and peers, will extend to other areas in a child’s life, making it easier for them to learn other skills. Many daycares and preschool programs carve out significant time for unstructured play, so it’s important that our learners have the skills they need to engage and participate.
Tips for Teaching Play Skills
Play is such a huge topic, and when teaching play skills, it helps to start with what’s developmentally appropriate for a child’s age. With early learners, it may be as simple as helping them to allow an adult into their space. From there, you can begin to teach imitation. You’ll learn play teaching best practices, what closed- and open-ended play activities are best, and how to use play scripts.
