Presented by BCBA Shayna Gaunt and Roberto and Lorena German of Multicultural Classroom.

Earn 1 Learning CEU for ACE and QABA.  Earn 1 Cultural CEU for IBAO.

Misunderstandings around student behavior are often rooted in cultural bias, leading to disproportionate discipline and missed opportunities for connection and support. In this dynamic and thought-provoking session, Roberto and Lorena German of Multicultural Classroom join BCBA Shayna Gaunt to challenge participants to critically examine how cultural misconceptions influence perceptions of student behavior. Through storytelling, lived experience, and practical strategies, this presentation will explore how educators can shift from deficit-based interpretations to culturally responsive approaches that affirm student identity and dignity. Join us to unpack the impact of implicit bias, decode behavior through a cultural lens, and reimagine discipline as a tool for equity and empowerment.

Presented by BCBA Shayna Gaunt, Roberto German, and Lorena German.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify common cultural misconceptions that influence how student behavior is perceived and interpreted in educational settings.

  2. Examine the role of implicit bias and systemic inequities in contributing to disproportionate disciplinary outcomes for students from marginalized backgrounds.

  3. Apply culturally responsive strategies to reframe student behavior in ways that foster empathy, equity, and inclusive classroom communities.
