A member of our Bx Resource membership community raised a question about teaching receptive language skills, specifically teaching receptive labels, as the strategies she tried weren’t working. So we thought we’d talk about some hacks for teaching receptive labels when the traditional strategies aren’t working.
Here, we cover how to teach receptive language skills in ABA. We go over the steps to take when building a receptive language program, including finding things that are meaningful to our learners and building up to teaching discrimination.
Tips for Teaching Receptive Language
We discuss the importance of teaching across categories as well as using more than one item at a time so our learners don’t get stuck. We also talk about how to customize programs for different types of learners and hacks we’ve used to overcome challenges.
When you make changes to a program it’s important to take data to see if the changes are helping your learners to make progress. Make sure you get our receptive labels data sheet below to use with your learners!
